{"id":4669,"date":"2011-07-22T13:03:49","date_gmt":"2011-07-22T17:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/?p=4669"},"modified":"2014-04-01T14:50:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-01T18:50:34","slug":"zhuangzi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.tm.org\/blog\/enlightenment\/zhuangzi\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWhy don\u2019t you try wandering with me to the Palace of Not-Even-Anything\u201d &#8211; Zhuangzi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Zhuangzi<br \/>\n369\u2013286 B.C. \u2022 CHINA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Zhuangzi, also known as Chuang Tzu, is esteemed alongside Laozi as one of the founders of Daoism in China. His writings also influenced the growth of Chinese Buddhism. Ancient though his writings are, Zhuangzi often refers to the \u201csages of old,\u201d placing the source of this knowledge in an even more distant antiquity. <\/p>\n<p>Almost nothing is known of his personal life; he may have been a minor government official. But his writings (known as the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iep.utm.edu\/zhuangzi\/\">Zhuangzi<\/a><\/em>) show him to be a brilliant, original thinker, concerned with how to live in a world of suffering and absurdity. After more than 2,000 years, his writings remain remarkably contemporary \u2014 in the issues he confronts, the solutions he proposes, and the humor he employs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Zhuangzi2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Zhuangzi2\" width=\"170\" height=\"185\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4675\" \/>In contrast to other schools that proposed political changes to improve individual and social life, Zhuangzi proposed a different solution: bring yourself into harmony with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/meditation\/laozi-and-the-tao-te-ching-the-ancient-wisdom-of-china\/\">Dao<\/a>, the Way, nature\u2019s intelligence, and the world will change automatically. <\/p>\n<p>And for this, a certain kind of experience is necessary. Here is how he describes it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why don\u2019t you try wandering with me to the Palace of Not-Even-Anything\u2002\u2014\u2002identity and concord will be the basis of our discussions and they will never come to an end, never reach exhaustion. Why not join with me in inaction, in tranquil quietude, in hushed purity, in harmony and leisure? Already my will is vacant and blank. I go nowhere and don\u2019t know how far I\u2019ve gotten. I go and come and don\u2019t know where to stop. I\u2019ve already been there and back, and I don\u2019t know when the journey is done. I ramble and relax in unbordered vastness; Great Knowledge enters in, and I don\u2019t know where it will ever end. [1]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_4679\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4679\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Butterfly.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Butterfly\" width=\"260\" height=\"203\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4679\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zhuangzi dreaming of a butterfly (or a butterfly dreaming of Zhuangzi)<\/p><\/div>Readers familiar with the experience of transcending will recognize that Zhuangzi is describing the experience of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlynchfoundation.org\/american-psychological-association.html\">Transcendental Consciousness<\/a>, a fourth major state of consciousness, beyond the familiar states of waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. They will recognize the \u201cPalace of Not-Even-Anything\u201d as a creative metaphor for pure consciousness, the field of silent, unbounded awareness deep inside each of us. It is a \u201cpalace\u201d in that it is grand, limitless, a vast treasure. Paradoxically, it is \u201cnot even anything\u201d in being transcendental, beyond thought, even beyond space and time and causality.<\/p>\n<p>Zhuangzi goes on to tell us what this experience is like. It brings one to \u201cinaction,\u201d \u201ctranquil quietude,\u201d \u201chushed purity,\u201d \u201charmony.\u201d In this state one\u2019s mind encompasses \u201cunbordered vastness\u201d \u2014 consciousness in its pure, unbounded status. It also brings \u201cGreat Knowledge\u201d \u2014 not knowledge of any particular thing but what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/maharishi\">Maharishi<\/a> calls <em>pure knowledge<\/em>, pure knowing<em>ness<\/em> \u2014 the experience of consciousness having settled inward and becoming awake to itself alone.<\/p>\n<p>Zhungzi elaborates on this simple, silent state as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The repose of the Sage is not what the world calls repose. His repose is the result of his mental attitude. All creation could not disturb his equilibrium: hence his repose. When water is still, it is like a mirror, reflecting the beard and the eyebrows. It gives the accuracy of the water-level, and the philosopher makes it his model. And if water thus derives lucidity from stillness, how much more the faculties of the mind! The mind of the Sage, being in repose, becomes the mirror of the universe, the speculum [reflector] of all creation. [2]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When your mind is truly \u201cin repose,\u201d Zhuangzi tells us, it reflects the entirety of the universe. What can this mean? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/benefits-brain\">Pure consciousness<\/a>, Maharishi asserts, is identical with the unified field of natural law \u2014 the source of thought deep within each of us is identical with the source of all the laws of nature deep within every point in the universe. <\/p>\n<p>This, for Zhuangzi, is how we can bring our lives into harmony with nature, with natural law \u2014 experience the Dao (pure consciousness) deep within us. What we can know or say about the Dao, Zhuangzi taught, is not the Dao itself \u2014 but it can be experienced. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_4727\" style=\"width: 270px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Maharishi1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Maharishi1\" width=\"260\" height=\"302\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4727\" srcset=\"https:\/\/usa.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Maharishi1.jpg 260w, https:\/\/usa.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/Maharishi1-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maharishi Mahesh Yogi<\/p><\/div>Fortunately we have a simple, natural, and effortless technique for doing so \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/meditation-techniques\">Transcendental Meditation<\/a> technique, brought to light from the most ancient continuous tradition of knowledge in the world, the Vedic tradition of India, by Maharishi.
