{"id":4980,"date":"2011-09-12T11:45:38","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T15:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/?p=4980"},"modified":"2011-11-02T16:34:49","modified_gmt":"2011-11-02T20:34:49","slug":"matching-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.tm.org\/blog\/research\/matching-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"DLF receives $500K matching grant to help veterans with post-traumatic stress learn TM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlynchfoundation.org\/\">David Lynch Foundation<\/a> announced on September 11th that it has received a $500,000 matching grant to be used to teach the Transcendental Meditation technique to 10,000 veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS) and their families.<\/p>\n<p>David Lynch, founder of the David Lynch Foundation, is inviting philanthropists and foundations to match the offer by Veterans Day, November 11th, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood directors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/people\/clint-eastwood\/\">Clint Eastwood<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/people\/martin-scorsese\/\">Martin Scorsese<\/a>, and George Lucas, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/people\/dr-mehmet-oz-speaks-on-stress-and-meditation\/\">Dr. Mehmet Oz<\/a>, Paul McCartney, Jerry Seinfeld, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/people\/russell-brand-transcendental-meditation\/\">Russell Brand<\/a> have joined Lynch in support of the outreach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3321\" title=\"Operation-Warrior-wellness\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Operation-Warrior-wellness.jpg\" alt=\"Operation-Warrior-wellness\" width=\"157\" height=\"118\" \/>Lynch&#8217;s veteran&#8217;s initiative comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/\">Operation Warrior Wellness (OWW)<\/a>, a division of the David Lynch Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2005 to bring Transcendental Meditation to at-risk populations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3724\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3724\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3724\" title=\"Norman-Rosenthal\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Norman-Rosenthal.jpg\" alt=\"Norman-Rosenthal\" width=\"140\" height=\"136\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Norman Rosenthal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/normanrosenthal.com\/\">Norman Rosenthal, M.D.<\/a>, psychiatrist and medical researcher at <a href=\"http:\/\/som.georgetown.edu\/\">Georgetown University Medical School<\/a> and author of the New York Times bestseller, Transcendence: Health and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation, research on the TM technique on the <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/sd5NRO\">veterans who have served in Iraq<\/a> and Afghanistan, and in Vietnam, has shown daily TM practice to be an effective means for reducing symptoms of PTS&#8211;and treating disorders associated with the illness. Findings include:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2022 Reduced PTS: 40 to 50 percent reduction in PTS symptoms, including depression, anxiety, flashbacks, and insomnia (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/ptsd.html\">More on TM &amp; PTSD<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Greater resiliency: Reduced stress levels and quicker recovery from stress (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/resilience.html\">More on TM &amp; reducing stress<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Decreased substance abuse: Decreased smoking, alcohol, and drug abuse (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/substance-abuse.html\">More on TM &amp; reducing substance abuse<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Reduced cardiovascular disease: Decreased blood pressure, harmful cholesterol, and atherosclerosis; and a 47 percent reduction in cardiovascular-related mortality (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/cardiovascular-disease.html\">More on TM &amp; improved cardiovascular health<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Decreased medical expenditures: 14 percent reduction in annual medical expenditures, as compared to the norm (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/decreased-healthcare-utilization.html\">More on TM &amp; decreased healthcare utilization<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_4306\" style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/David-Lynch.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox[sbpost-4980];player=img;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4306\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4306\" title=\"David-Lynch\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/David-Lynch.jpg\" alt=\"David-Lynch\" width=\"210\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Lynch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Operation Warrior Wellness is giving our dedicated service men and women a meditation technique that is a traumatic stress buster,&#8221; said David Lynch. &#8220;When they get this simple, effortless technique they will get their lives back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Operation Warrior Wellness is working with veterans&#8217; service organizations, army bases, and military colleges to bring the Transcendental Meditation technique to active duty personnel and veterans and their families.<\/p>\n<p>Veterans of four wars, from WWII to the present, launched the Operation Warrior Wellness initiative in December 2010. Researchers and celebrities joined <a href=\"http:\/\/www.operationwarriorwellness.org\/our-story.html\">founding veterans<\/a> Jerry Yellin, Ed Schloeman, and Col. Brian Rees, MD, at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlynchfoundation.org\/dec-13-2010-highlights.html\">press conference<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlynchfoundation.org\/dec-13-2010-highlights-2.html\">inaugural gala event<\/a> at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/CNN\/anchors_reporters\/crowley.candy.html\">CNN anchor Candy Crowley<\/a> hosted an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/DavidLynchFoundation#p\/u\/23\/eQCmDa6YQJ4\">event in Washington, D.C.<\/a> honoring this initiative.
