{"id":5105,"date":"2011-09-27T12:38:36","date_gmt":"2011-09-27T16:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/?p=5105"},"modified":"2011-09-27T12:44:03","modified_gmt":"2011-09-27T16:44:03","slug":"uk-free-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.tm.org\/blog\/news\/uk-free-school\/","title":{"rendered":"TM school among England\u2019s new \u201cFree School\u201d pioneers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Maharishi School ranks amongst the top 2.5% of all schools in the UK.<\/em>  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maharishischool.com\/\">Maharishi School<\/a> in Lancashire has been granted \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/freeschools\/b0066077\/free-school-proposals\">Free School<\/a>\u201d status by the UK\u2019s Department for Education, joining 23 other new state-maintained primary, secondary and all-age schools in England.<\/p>\n<p>Free Schools are part of the British government\u2019s new initiative to raise school standards across the country and tackle educational disadvantage.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Students-UK.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Students-UK\" width=\"211\" height=\"144\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5113\" \/>The new Free Schools, funded by the government, have greater freedoms than local authority-run schools: They are run by teachers\u2013not local councils\u2013and have freedom over such key educational components as the length of the school day, curriculum content, and how money is spent. <\/p>\n<p>Demand from parents for a unique, new type of education for students and families spurred the launch of the Free Schools. <\/p>\n<p>The UK Department for Education reported that \u201cover the past ten years the gulf in achievement between the rich and the poor has widened and the attainment gap between fee-paying schools and state schools has doubled.\u201d Free Schools are part of the government\u2019s strategy to narrow that attainment gap. <\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5116\" style=\"width: 152px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5116\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Michael-Gove.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Michael-Gove\" width=\"142\" height=\"140\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5116\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UK&#039;s Education Secretary, Michael Gove<\/p><\/div>According to the UK\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/a00198291\/michael-gove-on-free-schools\">Education Secretary, Michael Gove<\/a>, \u201cThe most important thing for any parent is to be able to send their child to a good local school with high standards and strong discipline. That is why we are opening Free Schools across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many children,\u201d Mr Gove said, \u201care being failed by fundamental flaws in our education system. By freeing up teachers and trusting local communities to decide what is best, our reforms will help to raise standards for children in all schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Maharishi School has a non-selective academic entrance policy, the School has been rated \u201cOutstanding\u201d\u2014the  top category used by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofsted.gov.uk\/\">Ofsted<\/a>, the Office for Standards in Education, Children\u2019s Services and Skills, an independent organization which reports directly to Parliament. <\/p>\n<p>As Ofsted reported: \u201cThe School\u2019s focus on individuals and its use of meditation and the quest for balance underpins all that it does. Students are calm, confident, self-assured, polite and considerate. They are eager to acquire knowledge and skills and enjoy learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Maharishi School\u2019s GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) examination results rank the School not only amongst the highest in Lancashire, but also in the top 2.5% of all schools nationally.  These results have been consistent since Maharishi School opened 25 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5118\" style=\"width: 146px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5118\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Lord-Hill.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Lord-Hill\" width=\"136\" height=\"123\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5118\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5118\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lord Hill, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools<\/p><\/div>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.gov.uk\/aboutdfe\/departmentalinformation\/ministerialteam\/hill\">Schools Minister Lord Hill<\/a>, &#8220;Maharishi School has long achieved outstanding results for its pupils and has been imaginative in its approach to raising standards. I am delighted that the education provided by this school will now be available for free to local young people. I wish the school every success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Maharishi School Head Teacher, Dr. Derek Cassells, commented that the School\u2019s exceptional results are due primarily to its implementation of \u201cConsciousness-Based Education,\u201d which incorporates the the Transcendental Meditation program to achieve balance in the pupil\u2019s physiology, and complements the School\u2019s traditional, broad, and balanced curriculum.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5112\" style=\"width: 137px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/Dr-Derek-Cassells.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Dr-Derek-Cassells\" width=\"127\" height=\"126\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5112\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maharishi School Head Teacher, Dr. Derek Cassells<\/p><\/div>Dr. Cassells explained that \u201cConsciousness-based Education directly develops receptivity, intelligence, creativity, neurophysiological integration, and better health in all students irrespective of their background, faith, attitudes, gender, or abilities. This is because the quality of the students\u2019 awareness is fundamental to successful educational outcomes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLikewise, all of the teachers at the School benefit tremendously from their morning and evening practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique which gives them the relaxation and alertness to manage every class effectively.
