Seventeen of the nation&#8217;s 50 largest cities had high school graduation rates lower than 50 percent. Nationally, about 1.2 million students drop out annually&#8211;one every 26 seconds, 7,000 every school day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When more than 1 million students a year drop out of high school, it&#8217;s more than a problem, it&#8217;s a catastrophe,\u201d says former Secretary of State Colin Powell, the founding chairman of the Alliance. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Picture-36.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Picture-36\" width=\"210\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5861\" \/>New Village Charter High School in Los Angeles is among a growing number of inner city schools that has found a solution to this problem in the \u201cQuiet Time\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/\">Transcendental Meditation<\/a> program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Javier Guzman, the school\u2019s principal, spoke at the December 2011 \u201cChange Begins Within\u201d national summit in Los Angeles sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlynchfoundation.org\/\">David Lynch Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"349\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/lH1gxIT4nSE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"560\" height=\"349\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/lH1gxIT4nSE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Javier Guzman, principal of New Village Charter High School:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This work of teaching Transcendental Meditation isn&#8217;t only about releasing stress. For my students and the thousands like them it&#8217;s about combating the problem of poverty and the poison of low expectations that clearly has been institutionalized and reinforced in our educational system. This work is about breaking destructive cycles of behavior. It&#8217;s about being given the tools to truly reach ones full potential. And as one of my students stated it&#8217;s about opening a door to someone I never knew I could be.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the video below you can hear the students and teachers of New Village talk about their experiences with the TM program.
