Download for Good: Music That Changes the World, a unique compilation album featuring music spanning across genres and generations, was released this week. The list of participating musicians is staggering, including such artists as Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Peter Gabriel, Ben Lee, Donovan, Amanda Palmer, and Moby, among many others. The 33-track album is now available exclusively on iTunes.
All proceeds from downloads of this album go directly to the David Lynch Foundation, a non-profit organization which brings the Transcendental Meditation technique to underserved populations, including at-risk inner-city youth and veterans returning home from combat with post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as Native Americans, homeless adults and children, prisoners, and others in desperate need of relief from acute stress.
“The artists who have shared their music are spreading happiness,” David Lynch said, when announcing the iTunes launch. “With their music alone they’re supporting programs that take away suffering and bring bliss to many people.”
Whitney Mathesen who writes “Pop Candy” for the national publication, USA Today wrote, “I’m used to praising David Lynch for his filmmaking — but who knew the man had such excellent taste in music?”
Jenny Charlesworth in her column on the popular online music site, Spinner, put it this way, “If anyone can change the world it’s David Lynch.”
Other artists featured on the album include Alanis Morissette, Andy Summers of the Police with Geeta Novotny, Arrested Development, Ben Folds, Carmen Rizzo with Grant-Lee Phillips, The Charlatans, Dave Stewart, Donovan, Julio Iglesias Jr., Maroon 5, Moby, former Apple Recording artist Mary Hopkin, Nancy Sinatra, Pink Jaffee with Jakob Dylan & Daryl Hannah, Rodrigo y Gabriela, and Slightly Stoopid with Don Carlos.
