Pioneering school principal brings peace to inner city children

Dr. George Rutherford was one of the first educators to establish the Quiet Time program—a period at the beginning and end of the school day that allows school children to practice the Transcendental Meditation technique.

As the principal and chief operating officer of the Fletcher-Johnson Educational Center in Washington, D.C. he introduced the Transcendental Meditation technique to more than a thousand students and faculty in the mid-1990’s.

Dr. Rutherford has been in education for 45 years, and a principle for 35 years. He is currently the principal of Ideal Academy Public Charter School, an award-winning school located in the heart of Washington, DC.

In this video interview Dr. Rutherford says,

“I have tried every program that has been put out by the Federal Government to improve students’ academic performance, to reduce the violence, to eradicate drugs. None of those programs did what they thought it would do. The Transcendental Meditation program is the one program that will do all of it, and more. Our kids are able to focus better and we are able to develop brighter students because of the Transcendental Meditation program.”

In a time when stress, violence, and drug abuse, plague the students in our school systems, Dr. Rutherford urges educators to introduce the TM program in their schools to help reduce stress.

“You will not see the crime and abusive behavior taking place in our schools. Schools will be a great place for young people to go and to learn.”
